Training Module on Traffic Engineering & Management
An effective urban transport system is vital for a successful society, economy, and a good quality of life. However, it has been proven that uncontrolled growth of transport has damaging effects on living conditions and our environment. One of the major side-effects of a development model based on private-vehicle ownership growth is ever increasing and - sooner or later - newly built roads. Various studies undertaken have concluded that losses due to road traffic congestion are costing developing economies, such as India, between 3-7% of annual urban GDP. The objective of this module is to inform, induce, and if necessary, direct road users towards a safer and more efficient use of the existing infrastructure. Simultaneously, it should also assist in safeguarding the quality of the environment for those living and working in the vicinity of the road network.
