Surya Prakash Vasarashetla is an Associate - Urban Development and Accessibility at WRI India Sustainable Cities. He coordinates the projects on improving the integration of land use and transportation with legal framework. He closely works with municipal corporations at city level, surface transport and urban development departments at state and national level. Currently he is working on transit oriented development (TOD) project demonstration along Bus Rapid Transit System in Hubli-Dharwad and station accessibility and corridor improvement in Bangalore city.
Prior to WRI India, Surya was involved mainly in the preparation of regional and master plans for multiple cities and towns across India. He worked for both brown field and green field city development projects for the last seven years in key positions. He was also involved in the preparation of 3rd generation master plans for multiple towns in Libya. He employs the latest techniques of remote sensing and GIS in assessing the land capabilities of a place before working out the detailed program. He deployed these techniques in assessing the land capabilities of the entire region in the preparation of Revised Structure Plan 2031 for Bangalore Metropolitan Region in India.
Surya has Masters in Urban and Rural Planning from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and Bachelors in Architecture from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad with gold medal. He is a registered member of Institute of Town Planners (India) and council of Architects (India) at New Delhi. E-Governance, use of information and communication technologies in planning, transportation and sustainable urban development are his few other interests.
