Designation: Manager - Urban Transport
Pawan is Manager – Urban Transport at WRI India. He is based in Mumbai where his primary focus is working with various stakeholders and transport agencies to provide technical support, sensitize sustainability and capacity building. He coordinates the technical support for city bus service operations, feasibility of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, parking policy reforms and comprehensive mobility Plans (CMPs) in Indian cities.
Pawan is the author of Bus Karo 2.0 - Case Studies from India that documents major reforms in city bus services across India. He is also developing a toolkit on household survey for improving the data collection process in the CMPs and a toolkit on parking. In addition, Pawan works closely with the Mumbai Transformation Support Unit providing guidance and support on various projects related to transportation issues including accessibility, connectivity and traffic operations in Mumbai.
Pawan has over 12 years of experience in the field of transportation planning and traffic engineering. Prior to joining WRI India, he worked as a consultant for close to a decade in the USA. He has worked with more than 30 cities providing solutions to mobility, circulation, parking, congestion management and signal coordination. He was responsible for assembling project teams and leading them towards developing and determining transportation planning and design solutions for all modes of transport and also managing multiple partners and/or stakeholders. His areas of specialisation include Traffic Operations, Circulation and Parking analysis, Travel Demand Forecasting, Air Quality Analysis, Sustainable Development, Pedestrian and Bike Studies, and Airport Landside Planning.
As part of his research at Clemson University, Pawan published and presented a paper at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) in 2004 on “Evaluation of Interstate Highway Capacity for Short-Term Work Zone Lane Closures” and was awarded the best paper award in the Work Zone Traffic Control Category. His recent paper on “Expanding Public Transport System through Feeder Buses” was recognized as the best research paper at the Urban Mobility India Conference-2013.
Pawan holds a Master’s degree in Transportation Engineering and Planning from Clemson University, South Carolina and Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from National Institute of Technology (NIT), Bhopal. Pawan is a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Maryland, USA.
