Nikhil is a Senior Associate - Urban Transport at WRI India Sustainable Cities. He is based in Mumbai and the focus of his work is the intersection of Street Design and Road Safety. He has worked on multiple road improvement projects along public transport corridors including the Mumbai Metro and the monorail in terms of preparing design proposals, recommending road safety strategies and advising on better on-site implementation. He is trained in road safety auditing and has conducted several audits across transit projects in Brazil, Mexico and Turkey. He is also committed to making BRT related infrastructure safer by co-authoring the ‘Road Safety Design Guidelines for BRT in Indian Cities’ and preparing design templates for the Bangalore BRT proposal in the making. He has also significantly working for Junction Improvement Projects that aim at improving intersections through better traffic engineering and safe infrastructure, particularly in the suburb of Thane.
Nikhil is an expert in designing bicycling infrastructure and has designed a framework for retrofitting existing road infrastructure for a public bike-sharing project at Mysore in this regard. Additionally, he has also worked on local area accessibility improvement projects in Mumbai and sector planning for the green-field city of Naya Raipur. The process of way-finding through better signage also interests him and he has recommended guidelines for better bus-stop signage for the Godrej industrial premises in Mumbai.
Nikhil is a registered Architect and Urban Designer. He holds a Master’s degree in Urban Design from CEPT University, Ahmedabad, a Diploma in Urban Planning from the University of Cergy-Pontoise, Paris and a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the University of Pune. Nikhil is also self-trained graphic artist, passionate about representing urban issues through various forms of comic strips and illustrations.
