Akshay Mani

Manager - Research and Practice


Akshay Mani is a Manager - Research and Practice team at WRI India Sustainable Cities. He is based in Mumbai and is managing WRI India’s research, policy and project initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable urban transport in Indian cities. Akshay is the lead author of Sustainable Urban Transport in India – Role of the Auto-rickshaw Sector, which presents a policy vision for auto-rickshaws in sustainable urban transport, and reform recommendations to organize services and address environmental and road safety challenges facing this sector. A version of this work was also accepted for presentation at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) in Washington, DC. He is leading WRI India’s activities on further research, information dissemination and policy-level engagement with key stakeholders at the city, state and national levels to take these recommendations forward.

 Akshay has close to 9 years of work experience in the areas of urban transport planning and policy, urban goods movement, and environmental impact assessment of transport projects.  Prior to joining WRI India, he worked as a transportation planner at Cambridge Systematics (CS), a leading transportation consulting firm in the U.S.  At CS, he contributed to some notable projects including a national level policy effort for the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) focusing on a port truck pricing framework to reduce truck traffic congestion and air pollution in cities, and a project in California to assess the environmental benefits of short-haul rail intermodal service at the Port of Oakland. During his stay in the San Francisco bay area, Akshay also engaged in activities with the Sierra Club, the San Francisco Food Bank, and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition.

Akshay holds a Master of Science (M.S.) in Transportation Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, and Bachelor and Master of Technology (B.Tech/M.Tech) degrees in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. Akshay’s interests include exploring cities on foot, traveling, running, and watching test cricket and tennis.
